About This Item
KPIX-TV silent news footage from June 10, 1960 in Sausalito featuring scenes of skipper Omer Darr (1917-1999) and his crew setting sail for Tahiti in the 98-foot pilot schooner 'Wanderer', owned by actor Sterling Hayden. Darr and his son William (10 years old) were taking a 3-month cruise with 22 passengers, who were paying $1800 per head (the equivalent to $19,000 per head in 2025). Includes views of passengers boarding, family and friends seeing them off and of Sterling Hayden watching and taking photos. Darr would charter and sail 'Wanderer' again for Tahiti later that year on November 20, 1960. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
Note that this schooner was originally launched as 'Gracie S' in 1893, was first purchased by Hayden for $7000 in 1946 and renamed 'Wanderer' and was eventually lost in November 1963 off the southern tip of Rangiroa Island, 200 miles northeast of Tahiti.
