Huey P. Newton talks about jail and his trial

KRON-TV news footage from September 5, 1968, with reporter Dave Valentine, featuring scenes from an interview with co-founder of the Black Panther Party Huey P. Newton in jail, pending the verdict of his trial for the murder of Oakland Police Officer John Frey. Newton describes his mental and physical condition, an incident of verbal abuse, remorse over the death of Officer Frey, and plans for the future. Also includes Newton's attorney Charles Garry taking about options for an appeal, if needed. Ends with Newton joking about how Garry had claimed that: "Jesus was a Panther." Note that after 4-days of deliberation, the jury found Newton guilty of voluntary manslaughter on September 8, at 10:10pm.
This 16mm film reel was kindly donated to the TV Archive by David Webb Peoples in April 2023, who used to work as a film editor for KRON in the 1960s.
