Photograph of San Francisco State College Marching Band practicing with drum major in Cox Stadium on the Lake Merced campus. Edwin C. Kruth, recognized as an authority on woodwind instruments and a respected performer of the clarinet, started teaching music at San Francisco State after in August 1947. Under Kruth’s direction, San Francisco State College's bands became recognized as some of the finest in the United States. During his tenure, the instrumental music department also grew to be one of the largest music programs in the western United States with an award-winning marching band.
