SF State drum major inspiring future drum majors

About This Item

Photograph of San Francisco State College's drum major teaching high school students the drill. J. Paul Leonard, the fourth president of San Francisco State, mobilized faculty to tie curriculum "to the life and interests of the Bay Area." Leonard saw an opportunity to jazz up "a college with a creditable history -- remake its instructional program to serve an ever-widening group of Bay Area young people, tie it closely to the life and interests of the Bay Area, and build an entirely new campus." As part of Leonard's public relations efforts, the College Band traveled to local high schools to recruit the best students, and this image likely depicts a trip to Commerce High School in San Francisco, California.
