"SF State students dashing to class through the Haight Street entrance to Anderson Hall" from the "1947 Franciscan" yearbook

About This Item

Photograph of San Francisco State College students rushing to classes in Anderson Hall. One of the landmarks of the Buchanan Street campus was a mosaic by Maxine Albro (1893-1966) for the Haight Street entrance to Anderson Hall. The Works Progress Administration commissioned Albro to install the first mosaic that had every part of the process carried completion in California. The mosaic was comprised of a palette of 29 different marbles depicting a boy with a book, a girl with a friendly squirrel sitting amongst plants, and indigenous California animals.
