Photographic spread of San Francisco State College’s Budo Club. Budo or "way of the warriors" study the martial arts including judo, karate, Iko-do, ken-do, and kyu-do and San Francisco State offered judo and karate under the sponsorship of business professor Jack Yuen. The officers in the club were Gosen Yamaguchi (president), Didier Iloy (vice president), Myron Chan (secretary-treasurer), and David Charles and Hal Abercrombie. During the first tournament in fall of 1963, Teru Kawooka earned a first degree black belt. Yamaguchi was the son of the founder of the Goju-school of Karate in Japan and San Francisco State was an early college in the United States to offer martial arts training.
