Kampus Kapers was created in 1945 by J. Fenton McKenna, dean of Creative Arts, and Jules Irving, professor of Drama, Co-Producer of the Actor's Workshop. Originally, faculty members directed and students performed. Later sponsored by the Associated Students and the Drama Department, the show was completely run by students who directed, designed and executed sets and costumes, originated and performed the choreography, wrote scripts, and composed and played the music. Money earned from the productions went to scholarships. Kampus Kapers ceased production circa 1966. Pre-World War II, it was preceded by a similar 1930s-early 1940s student variety show called the "Chicken's Ball," sponsored by Alpha Phi Gamma, a journalism fraternity. Money earned from this production also was used to support scholarships.
