Beta Pi Sigma promoted progressive science at San Francisco State by sponsoring films, field trips, and lectures and membership was open to students with passing grades in at least one science course. Fisher pioneered with her style of instruction when she took small groups of students to do field work at Bixby Canyon (south of Carmel, California) on primitive camp-out field trips in 1948 and 1949 when students helped to collect data for her papers.
