San Francisco State had a junior WPA (the NYA), and students earned $ .25 per hour to chop down all of the trees in February 1940. The NYA boys were sent to do preliminary cleaning of the Lake Merced site and The “Rock,” located on the corner of Utah and Pariposa streets, was established as San Francisco State College’s first dormitory housing these twenty male students. Under the direction of baseball coach Hal Harden, the students did their own housework but employed outside help to prepare meals. The Rock offered room and board to the “inmates” that were some of the College’s most prominent athletes.
