Photograph of Virginia Green was a graduate of San Francisco State College in Elementary Education with a concentration in art; she taught in the SF schools for a little bit but did not enjoy it. She went on to earn an MFA at University of Oregon in 1947 concentrating on sculpture. She tried to establish a career making garden and architectural sculptures. Architects suggested that she explore an opening field of making scale models for architectural projects. Green eventually established Architectural Model Supply, Inc. (AMSI) in San Francisco on a side street in the industrial area. “It was slim pickings at the start, but we have all the business we can handle now.” The first four years were lean as she convinced architects that she could make precise scale models that would be valuable tools that would enable clients to see just how a project would look, and to visualize the interior space and even room furnishings. Green began to consolidate the industry. The business doubled its revenue annually for years. Green and her partner later relocated the business to Petaluma and San Rafael, California.
