Frances Kelleher was San Francisco State College Queen; the College Theater presented the comedy “George and Margaret,” Jean Van Arsdale, Fran Twohig, and Audrey Stewart performed a dance routine, and Peggy Clifford, Frances Kelleher, and Betty Fisher were all contenders for SFSC Queen. In a Holloway Historians interview conducted on May 6, 1987, Clifford Worth (class of 1939) described how San Francisco State students were involved in the GGIE. The actual dredging of Treasure Island began in 1937. Clifford and his girlfriend Dawn (later the two married) were among the students chosen from San Francisco State College, who gathered and transported to the island in a Crowley tugboat and wedged in the mud for a publicity photograph. When the GGIE opened, each college had its own theme day in May. San Francisco State got a lot of publicity when it had its own theme day, and the college’s Madrigal Singers, A Cappella Choir, String Quartet, and student pianists received awards in competitions. At the end of the World Fair, the College received plants and shrubs for the Lake Merced Campus.
