As more men were drafted to serve in World War II, Pierre Salinger (1925-2004) became managing editor of the “Golden Gater;” he wrote an early expose on politics in the Music Federation on March 12, 1942. Despite many changes in the “Golden Gater” that occurred during the war, the success of the paper in continuing its coverage garnered a first prize honor from the Associated Collegiate Press. Scholten was on the Board of Publications and President of honorary journalism fraternity Alpha Phi Gamma (established in 1931) and Salinger was member; both were also involved with the Men’s honorary fraternity Sigma Alpha Eta (established in 1938) and the Golden Gater newspaper. Scholten was involved with the Franciscan staff of the honorary dramatics fraternity Alpha Psi Omega (established in 1941), the honorary service organization Sigma Gamma Sigma (established in 1941), the Art Federation. Salinger was secretary-treasurer of the debate award fraternity Delta Sigma (established in 1930), and a member of the Newman Club.
