Michelangelo Merisi da CARAVAGGIO (1573 - 1610): Before being called by Christ Matthew was a sinner. He is shown here in a realistic tavern at the moment that Christ calls to him. The calling is powerfully moving; Christ himself is mostly hidden in shadow-note the light emanating from him.
