Bartolomeo Francesco RASTRELLI (1700-1771): Several palaces were built over time on the estate which Peter I presented to his wife Catherine (later Catherine I) in 1710. In 1748-1756, under Empress Elizabeth I, Rastrelli significantly remodelled the Catherine Palace, originally built by Mikhail Zemtsov and others in 1741. The gate has an E for Ekaterina (Catherine in Russian).
