RENAISSANCE Anonymous: Lull (c. 1232-1316) was a Catalan philosopher who aspired to convert Muslims to Christianity. He was deported from North Africa where he challenged Muslim scholars to public debates. Tradition says he was stoned to death on a 3rd trip that began in 1315.
