Olfert DAPPER (c. 1635- 1689): The West African city-state of Benin was founded in 1300 CE and flourished until 1897. The print is from the French edition of Dapper's Description of Africa. Jacob van Meurs was the printmaker and engraver for the original Dutch edition of 1668.
