Ash urn with elderly spouses or man with goddess of death.

About This Item

ETRUSCAN Anonymous: This sarcophagus demonstrates the focus that was placed on the heads of individuals in contrast to the secondary treatment of the body in Etruscan funerary decoration. The heads of the individuals that adorn this urn are large and disproportionate to the bodies. The characteristics of the male figure supports the claim that funerary figures meant to memorialize the deceased are likely not accurate portraits but are generic images based on Hellenistic portraits. Such portraits are given some individualistic features in order to reflect characteristics such as age. A similar male likliness has been identified on other Volterran urns.
