ETHIOPIAN AXUMITE Anonymous (c. 100 BCE - c. 700): According to the legend the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Axum by companions of Menalik, the son of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. It was placed in this chapel and is only seen by the high priest. The chapel was originally built between the 4th and 6th century and was rebuilt in 1960. The ruins of the original chapel are seen below and were excavated by the Italians.
