Chariot Race- Relief Frieze.

ETRUSCAN Anonymous: This is one of two friezes that survived from a cippus that originally probably contained three decorated sides. The relief displays three three-horse chariots each led by one charioteer. The legs of the teams of horses are all raised in unison and a line of trees in the background demonstrates the preference for symetry in art at the time. The frieze that decorates the other side (not show) displays athletes presenting themselves to judges. The scenes represented probably allude to funeral games.
