Cyrene. Nicodaemean Wall. View with sheep.

About This Item

ROMAN PROVINCIAL Anonymous (active c. 300 BCE - 500 CE): The wall was constructed under Nicodaemus when the Greek-era theater was changed into an amphitheater under the Romans. It was believed that the bloody sports and killing shown at the amphitheater should not be visible from the Sanctuary of Apollo. The wall hides the view of the amphitheater from the Sanctuary.
