Foot race. Relief Frieze.
About This Item
ETRUSCAN Anonymous: This fragment of a cippus recreates a foot race. The scene features three athletes racing on foot toward a young boy who is extending a cloth and a man who is possibly a judge holding out an ointment jar. To the left of the athletes a man dressed in a tunic turns toward a figure who is unidentifiable due to the fragmentation of the piece. Three earthenware jars are shown between the legs of the athletes- this style demonstrates the tendancy towards symetry in art at the time.
