ETHIOPIAN AXUMITE Anonymous (c. 100 BCE - c. 700): The stele is engraved withan inscription that is thought to be the oldest example of Ge'ez script, the ancient language of Ethiopia. The inscription is thought to translate as "This monument which was erected by Agaze is dedicated to his forefathers for their defeat of the forces of Aw'a Alefe and Tsebelen."
