GREEK CLASSIC Anonymous (480 BCE-323 BCE): Adonis the lover of Aphrodite was killed in a hunting accident. Zeus grants him immortality but Adonis must split his time between the underworld with Persephone and on earth with Aphrodite. Small terracotta altars were used for private worship; they were particularly popular in the Greek colonies in southern Italy and Sicily.
