About This Item

ETRUSCAN Anonymous: This sarcophagus features the image of Ramtha Visnai and Arnth Tetnies embracing as husband and wife. The inscription on the sacrophagus specifies that only the remains of the wife Ramtha Visnai occupy the container. The scene depicted on the side of the urn demonstrates the high social standing of the couple. The couple stands together in the center of the scene and attendants on both sides of the couple carry objects that represent the high status of the husband as a high magistrate and the wife as a priestess. The husband and the wife are both attended to by four individuals- this balanced composition represents the equality of the husband and wife in their own respected positions of power.
