Urn with seated mother and child (Mater Matuta).

ETRUSCAN Anonymous: This cinerary urn depicts a seated woman holding a child. The enthroned mother is flanked by two crouching sphinxes that act as elbow rests and guard the remains of the deceased. The head and feet of the urn were carved separate from the body and the head acts as the lid of the urn. Grave goods found inside the internal cavity of the urn included gold jewelry. The urn has been referred to as Mater Matuta- an allusion to the goddess of maternity.
