ETHIOPIAN ZAGWE DYNASTY Anonymous: The fortress-like appearance of the building has led to idea that the building may have been designed originally as a residence for King Lalibela, but was transformed into a church at a later date. The five meter trench that surrounds the building adds to its impression of size. However the building is quite small inside.
