Parchment making. Stretched skin of a stillborn goat.
About This Item
MEDIEVAL Anonymous (400-1500): Skins were soaked in lime and placed on a stretcher where the skin was scraped using a knife with a curved blade. As the skin dried the tension of the stretcher was adjusted so that the skin remained taut. The cycle of scraping and stretching was repeated over several days until the desired thinness had been achieved.
