About This Item

BYZANTINE PROVINCIAL Anonymous (c. 330-1453): The original mosaic was made up of 10 rows of 5 panels set into a grid with a frame of looped-circles. The Tigris was one of the 4 paradisiacal rivers of Eden in the Book of Genesis (Chap. 2). Kastalia was the pagan nymph of the prophetic springs of the Delphic Oracle. Nilotic panels with birds, fish, and flowers may reflect Egyptian influence.
