OTTOMAN Anonymous (1516 - 1918): Built on Roman foundations. Crusader fortress used by the Knights of St. John, c. 1530-1550. Reinforced by the Hospitaller Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Valette before it fell to the Turks in the 1550s. Extensively renovated in 1922 by the Italian governing authority and again in the 1980s by UNESCO. Since 1988, has housed the Jamahiriya Museum.
