F. FANELLI (act. 1687): The Parthenon survived virtually intact until 1687 when it was blown up during a Venetian siege of the Acropolis. The Ottoman Turks had been using the Parthenon as a store for gunpowder and it was ignited by the Venetian bombardment. The explosion destroyed the roof and parts of the walls and the colonnade.
