BRITISH Anonymous: The Bloody Assizes were a series of trials in September 1685 in Dorchester, Dorset, after the Monmouth Rebellion. Sent by King James II, Judge Jeffreys tried the defeated supporters of the rebel Duke of Monmouth seated in a chair such as this.
