About This Item
ETHIOPIAN LATER SOLOMONIC Anonymous: A Portuguese mission under Rodrigo de Lima had been invited into Ethiopia in 1520 by King Lebna Dengel of Shewa to form an alliance against the Turks. The Portuguese helped the Ethiopians defeat Ahmed Gragn in 1543. Later the Jesuits tried unsuccessfully to convert them to Roman Catholicism. However they brought western iconography and much of it remained after they were expelled.
