About This Item

ETHIOPIAN 2ND GONDARINE STYLE Anonymous (c. 1730 - 19th c): This iconography is unusual in Ethiopian art and was undoubtedly copied from a European model. The pose is awkward as the artist doesn't understand the three-dimensionality of the bady sitting on her lap. The king on the left praises her playing the lyre, an action which ties him to his supposed ancestor King David who played before the arc.
