About this collection

Mahmoud Zoufonoun’s transcriptions from his personal collection of dastgah material are presented here in the very same order as they were transmitted to Dr. Modirzadeh, in Redwood City and San Jose, CA, during the Spring of 1983.  As Mr. Zoufonoun continually added to his repertoire – rendering a collection that is as inclusive as it is eclectic – with a boundless well of memory that encompassed both autonomously regional as well as personally artistic sources, each dastgah represented extends beyond the traditional radif definition (as fixed pedagogical tool). Ultimately, Mr. Zoufonoun’s tireless culling of what seems to be an endless amount of material, renders a final work that is so expansive as to be regarded here as unfinished, or by nature, incomplete.  The first of the twelve repertoires played is Mahur. In the meantime, all feedback is welcome.  Note: audio playback approximately one half-step lower than written music.
