In this course we delve into the planning process and learn about the basic tools used in planning, such as zoning and
general plans, and consider some of the most critical problems associated with the
process of urbanization and the form it takes. We will start by addressing the historic roots of land use control, move to the basic technical aspects of contemporary planning, and, in the second half of the course, tackle important
land use issues such a sprawl, new urbanism, and the privatization of public space.
