ETRUSCAN Anonymous: This detail shows the face of the deceased as depicted on the lid of a sarcophagus. The depiction of deceased as lifeless and at rest as opposed to vibrant and alive represents a transition that took place in Etruscan funerary decoration during the fifth century and final centuries of Etruscan civilization. The funerary decoration of the last Etruscan centuries as shown here may have been a humanized reminiscence of the Egyptian mummy form.
