See slide from 1911 for an older view. Just above the white apartment building at the bottom edge, a part of Kite Hill is visible. Market Street is the prominent street at the right - ending at 17th Street with the Castro Theater nearby. The high-rise Financial District now extends on both sides of Market Street. Recognizable early buildings -- the white tower on the right of Market Street towards the bay is the Spreckles Building - it was the tallest building in the city. It was gutted in 1906 and rebuilt. The tall building south of Market Street and closest to the right edge is the Pacific Bell building at 140 New Montgomery Street. For a long time, it was the only high-rise south of Market Street; it even had flags to warn sailboats of windy conditions because it was so visible. On the north side of Market Street are the U.S. Mint, then the AAA annex on Van Ness Avenue, and the Fox Plaza buildings. To the left is the dome of City Hall; the large dark building is the Federal Building on Golden Gate Avenue. The TransAmerica building and the dark Bank of America building are clearly visible. At the left side of the photo is Corona Heights; the site of the Gray Brothers Quarry now includes the Randall Museum. Behind it is St. Mary's Cathedral (the white building). The trees on the left are in Buena Vista Park, and the dark line of trees on the horizon mark Lafayette Park.
