Shepard A. Insel started at SF State in 1954 as a Professor of Psychology and Dean of Educational Services and Summer Sessions. He earned his BA (1949), MA (1950), and Ph.D. (1955) from Stanford University. Trained in industrial psychology, Insell succeeded Raymond Doyle in supervising the Downtown Center at 540 Powell Street that enrolled 4,000 to 4,500 students a semester in life-long learning and summer session.
