Photograph taken from the roof of the San Francisco State University Library showing the large excavation created after demolition of the Commons complex and nearby student organization huts in early 1973. The excavation prepared the site for construction of the new Student Union, which opened in October 1975 and was later renamed the Cesar Chavez Student Center in 1994. The Psychology Building and Burk Hall (formerly the Education Building) are visible in the upper left portion of the image, helping locate the construction site within the central campus.
