The Commons and surrounding huts that housed student organizations were demolished during winter break to clear space for the construction of the new Student Union. The excavation shown here represents the foundation preparation phase of that project. The Student Union opened in October 1975 and was renamed the Cesar Chavez Student Center in 1994.
