Herbert L. Zettl. 1959. Professor of Broadcast Communication Arts. BA (1955) MA (1956) Stanford University; Ph.D. (1966) University of California, Berkeley. Zettl worked as a floor director at KPIX (CBS, San Francisco) before coming to SF State. He was an artist and expert on media aesthetics who taught how media should be connected to ethics because it can be manipulated for particular communications messages. His book Sight Sound Emotion (1973) about applied aesthetics in television, film, photography, graphics, and multimedia projects became a classic textbook. Zettl received a 1966 Distinguished Teacher Award from the California State Legislature. [There is a Zettl painting on the Ground Floor].
