ROMAN LATE ANTIQUE Anonymous (284 - c. 500): The monogram at the top probably says SYMMACHORUM a reference to the Symmachi family; one of the leading families in Rome. The panel possibly commemorates Quintus Aurelius Symmachus (c. 340-402) a prominent pagan and opponent of Christianity and the greatest orator of his day.
