Juan GOMEZ DE LA MORA (act. early 17th c): The square was built for Phillip III in 1617 by Juan GOMEZ DE LA MORA. Rebuilt by Juan de Villanueva after the fire of 1791. He made all the buildigs the same height. Restored in 1848. The equestrian statue of Phillip III in the center of the square was made by Giambologne and Pietro Tacca in 1616.
