Juan GOMEZ DE LA MORA (act. early 17th c): The square was built for Phillip III in 1617 by Juan GOMEZ DE LA MORA. Rebuilt by Juan de Villanueva after the fire of 1791. He made all the buildings the same height. Since the 17th century Madrilenos have watched bullfights jousts and other spectacles in the square.
