Race - The Power of an Illusion: The House We Live In (Updated over a year ago)

The last episode of the “Race- The Power of an Illusion” series explores the ways our institutions and policies advantage some groups at the expense of others, specifically how benefits accrue to white people in the US due to the racialized nature of our society.  Coverage begins with the massive migrations from southern and eastern Europe in the early 20th century, and traces the struggles of different groups to attain “white” status and its attendant advantages.  It concludes that the continuing inequalities in US society are due to lack of opportunity related to wealth, rather than to natural differences, and proposes that “until we address the legacy of past discrimination and confront the historical meanings of race, the dream of equality will remain out of reach.”
