Blue Fig is in the only one-story building on this entire block, and has been here since 2010; previously the storefront was occupied by a glass-cutting business. After Life was the location of a neighborhood controversy in 2009, when the American Apparel chain planned to open here. There was a major protest and 2500 people signed a petition against the store. Although there were 27 vacancies on Valencia Street, people were afraid of a chain store invasion. In the face of protest, American Apparel withdrew.
