Photograph taken from the roof of the San Francisco State University Library showing the large excavation following demolition of the Commons complex and adjacent student organization huts in early 1973. The cleared site is being prepared for construction of the new Student Union, completed in 1975 and later renamed the Cesar Chavez Student Center in 1994. Construction vehicles and graded earth fill the former location of the Commons. In the background, Psychology Building and Thornton Hall are visible, situating the excavation within the central campus.
